Quoting riksplace:
So your question of why there are so many isn't really the question. The question could be why do we not acknowledge our true nature is love and to express sex with other human beings is the normal thing to do.
Sex is natural, harmless, guiltless, free of shame. It is a society's chosen constructs that bring about the current apparent majority view on sexuality we have today.
The normal perfect expression of sexuality is to have sex.
The ancient Greeks and Romans enjoyed sex from the moment a child expressed a desire. The parents would enjoy sex teaching their children. A girls first experience was usually with her Father and a boy with his Mother. It was also the norm for sexual expressions with the same sex too. A boys experiences tended to be with men before women, same with a girls.
This is also the case in pre-white Pacific Islander populations. And with the majority of Native American nations prior to the European invasion.
All of this has been well documented, but highly surpressed and filtered, and is not typically taught correctly today.
The same with animals. Recently the Bonobo apes, which are the very closest to us DNA wise - more than any other mammal, have been reported greater than ever before. Bonobo's have sex with each other all of the time, almost constantly, and that is same sex, between parent and offsprings, between siblings, and they are noted for being the most peaceful and content society.
Unlike many other ape populations, particularly Chimpanzees, which we are most often compared to in an attempt to misdirect our understanding away from the sexual nature of our closet ape relative.
Dolphins have long been observed to be bisexual and behave very similarly to Bonobos. However there have also been reports from biologists about non-consensual sex between pods.
Our current dysfunctional view of sex is religious dogma based. It has caused more harm and tragedy, violence, illness, and the list goes on, all because of some ancient old men around 350AD that decided suppressing sex would give them greater powers and influence.
This too is well documented and known but not taught.
What we do teach is incorrect and perpetuates the dysfunction.
