Ending a relationship can feel like losing a part of yourself. As an independent, successful woman, you may think you’ve got it all together when it comes to handling break-ups. You tell yourself, “Life goes on,” and try to move forward with confidence. But no matter how strong we are, loneliness and a sense of loss often creep in after the dust settles.
I learned this firsthand after my five-year relationship ended. It was a relationship that, despite its inevitable end, left me feeling more empty than I expected. I had always prided myself on being resilient. I thought I knew how to handle heartache. I’d cry, listen to sad love songs, maybe drink some wine, and go about my life. But when it was my turn to face the end, all of those strategies went out the window. The reality of losing not just a partner, but my sense of self, hit hard.
For years, I had shaped my life around my boyfriend. His world of adventure, from skydiving to exotic travels, became my world too. I got swept up in his excitement and forgot to nurture my own passions. When we broke up, I woke up to find that the life I had built was not mine anymore. I had lost my best friend, my sense of identity, and my social life.
To make matters worse, my ex started dating someone from our mutual friend group. Suddenly, I couldn’t even hang out with my friends without running into them. I was left with few connections and a void that was hard to fill. It was a wake-up call: Without the relationship, I had nothing.
As time passed, though, I started to pick up the pieces. I learned a few hard-earned lessons that can help anyone navigating a break-up:
Preserve Your Sense of Self – Don’t lose who you are in a relationship. Stay connected to your values, passions, and individuality.
Maintain a Core Friend Group – Keep friends who are yours no matter your relationship status. A strong support system outside of your romantic life is vital.
Nurture Your Own Interests – Engage in hobbies and activities that make you feel whole. These are the things that will keep you grounded when life throws curveballs.
While following these steps won’t make the heartache disappear, it will help you navigate life post-relationship with more resilience. A relationship may end, but don’t let that be the end of your world. Keep your life moving forward—and above all, don’t forget yourself.
